The Virtual
2020 Season

In 2020, Trade School Manila moved online. Here is how barter worked when classes went virtual.

What could go on a wish list?

Canned food, art materials and books were common, but it wasn't limited to things. It could be client referrals, help designing a website, a hand with deliveries, even music recommendations.

How were goods exchanged?

Trade School Manila coordinated directly between students and teachers. Because classes ran remotely, that was usually via delivery apps like Lalamove, Angkas and Grab.

And services?

We acted as the go-between to agree on and confirm the exchange, either right after the class or when the teacher and student could meet.

Was there ever a cash fee?

During the 2020 virtual season, a small cash option existed for teachers who needed immediate financial help, because swapping physical goods was hard. Teachers could always waive it. Our default is still barter.

Did teachers need to be professionals?

No. You need something you can share and a plan for the hour. That's it.
